Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I get a cat?
It depends on whether or not you are interested in getting a certain breed or not. If this is not something you are looking for and you just want a non-pedigree cat, there are many shelters, like the Humane Society, that have cats and kittens for sale. You can also check your local vet's office, as occasionally stray kittens are brought to veterinary offices.

Should I get a male or a female?
Males tend to be more outgoing, while females are more toward the shy side. However, once neutered/spayed, their temperaments generally are very similar.

Should my cat be neutered/spayed?
This obviously depends on whether or not you intend to breed your cat. If this is not of interest to you, we highly recommend that you neuter/spay your cat. Un-neutered males have a tendency to spray, and if he is an indoor cat this is a big problem. If females are left un-spayed (females are spayed, males are neutered) they will eventually go into heat/estrus. Outdoor cats should definitely be neutered/spayed, as it is likely that they will come in contact with other cats of the opposite gender, which very possibly could result in an unexpected litter of kittens.

What is the best type of cat food?
We recommend Iams, Science Diet or Life's Abundance. As of March 19th, 2007 there has been a massive food recall on wet food which includes many brands of wet cat and dog food. We recommend feeding your cats exclusively dry food, for various reasons, including dental health, and the overall health of your cat.

Should I have more than one litter box?
This depends on how many cats you have. We have three, and have 2 litter boxes, one on each floor. It is not necessary to have more than one litter box, but have one on each floor is a good idea. One litter box is fine too, but it is best to clean it often.
